The "Cannabis Cup" event is organized by High Times Magazine. The winners in each category will be awarded their own Cannabis Cup trophy, signifying excellence in cannabis product creation. However, participants suggest that recognition isn't the sole reward.
“To see this happen, it’s going to put New Mexico on the map,” said Bear, a Cannabis Cup judge, per the KOB report.
The report noted that local enthusiasts eagerly queued at Enchanted Botanicals on Saturday morning to officially partake in the historic competition. “It is, again, like the Oscars of cannabis,” noted Mark Kazinec, Vice President of Cannabis Cups & Events, per the report.
Different winning categories
The contest is divided into 11 categories, reflecting the diverse range of products in the cannabis industry. Categories include sativa flowers, infused pre-rolls, and edible gummies. What sets this competition apart from others, like the Oscars, is that the judgment lies in the hands of everyday New Mexicans.
“Anybody from the OG growers who know how to talk about terpene profiles, to the soccer moms who are trading their glass of wine for a joint at the end of the night," explained Kazinec, as per the report. "We want their comments, their feedback."
The report noted that judges would assess the products based on appearance, taste, aroma, texture, and, most importantly, effectiveness. Over the next two months, they can sample all the products and submit their evaluations online.
Per the report, anticipation is high, with approximately 185 entries in the contest. High Times plans to announce the winners in a live show scheduled for September in Rio Rancho, adding another milestone to New Mexico's thriving cannabis scene.
